Many severely or critically ill patients who use ventilators have nitric oxide delivered through the Ikaria INOmax DS Drug Delivery System. The nitric oxide is set at an exact concentration for the patient, and if anything goes wrong with the drug delivery system, not enough oxygen may get through to the tissues of the body of the patient. If the tissues of the body of these already critically ill patients do not receive enough oxygen, side effects may include organ damage, low blood pressure, a heart beat that is slower, heart attack, acute respiratory distress, and even death.

Why have some serial numbers of the Ikaria INOmax DS Drug Delivery System been recalled? (serial numbers include DS20070005-DS20100865)

The Class I recall (serious and urgent) was issued for the fear of possible serious side effects in patients (which may include organ damage, low blood pressure, a heart beat that is slower, heart attack, acute respiratory distress, and even death) because of irregular nitric oxide readings on monitors – caused by fretting corrosion of certain metals in the electrical contact area of the Ikaria INOmax DS drug delivery system.

What is fretting corrosion?
Fretting corrosion damage happens when metal surfaces are subjected to high load or movement eg vibration in the area or between them. If the surfaces are not supposed to touch together but do, fretting corrosion occurs. If something is not supposed to happen, but does, complications may occur.

During routine service (by Ikaria) of the Ikaria INOmax DS Drug Delivery Systems, an anti-corrosion lubricant is being applied to prevent corrosion fretting. This anti-corrosion lubricant is DeoxIT. Using DeoxIT has been included in the preventive maintenance plan for all INOmax DS Drug Delivery Systems. DoexIT is applied when Ikaria’s Regional Service Centers do routine service of the Ikaria INOmax DS Drug Delivery Systems.

If you or a loved one is seeing or suspecting irregular readings on monitors for Ikaria INOmax DS Drug Delivery Systems, or is experiencing side effects such as low blood pressure, a heart beat that is slower, or acute respiratory distress, inform your health care provider or doctor immediately and consider contacting a lawyer to set up a consultation to discuss the merits of your possible Ikaria INOmas DS drug delivery system lawsuit case.
